About us

Zemer Chai, "living song", is a choir of 30 singers dedicated to sharing the rich and diverse musical heritage of the Jewish people. Founded in 1976 by conductor and artistic director Eleanor Epstein, the choir sings the full range of the Jewish repertoire: the beautiful late Renaissance compositions of Salomone Rossi, the great European liturgical classics of the 19th century, the works of the great modern Jewish composers, the ever-growing and exciting work of Israeli composers, as well as Jewish folk music from all over the world. In addition to preserving and promoting the wonderful music of the past, the choir also commissions new works to add to the Jewish choral repertoire.

As the Jewish Choir of Washington, D.C., Zemer Chai appears throughout the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, in numerous synagogues as well as community-wide events of all kinds. A proud representative of the Jewish community, the choir participates in many interfaith events as well - building bridges to people of all religious and cultural backgrounds. With their joyful and passionate commitment to the music, the singers communicate the deeper story of the Jewish experience as well as the values of justice and mutual respect that are central to the Jewish tradition. As fanaticism grows throughout the world, this aspect of the choir's mission has become more and more critical.

As one of the premier Jewish choirs in the United States, Zemer Chai has also performed both nationally and internationally. The choir has appeared in New York and Boston, and throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Additionally, Zemer Chai has made three trips to Israel, singing all over the country as part of the Zimriyah, Israel's International Choral Festival.

The members of Zemer Chai come from all walks of Jewish life. Some work as Jewish community professionals and others find their personal and professional vocations in the non-Jewish world; some are religiously observant and others more secular; some are recently out of college and others spend their free time playing with their grandchildren. What the singers share, in addition to their enthusiasm and love of singing, is a dedication to maintaining the highest musical standards, a passion for Jewish choral music, and a commitment to sharing that passion with others.

Admission is by audition.
